强迫症

强迫症
I learned a new word in Chinese today while listening to Chinesepod.  I believe I learned it before, and likely Maomao would be upset with me for forgetting.  Unfortunately if I don’t use words then I am not so likely to remember them.

Let’s look at the components here for fun:

强 (qiang): strong, powerful, energetic
迫 (po): coerce, force, compel, stress, urgent, distressed
症 (zheng): disease, illness, ailment

There you have it, strongly compelled disease, also known in English as OCD. I find it weird that OCD has become a bit of a joke, and the tone in the podcast i was listening to (produced in Shanghai) makes it sound as though the humor of the whole thing carries through there as well.

There was a time where Maomao was interested in abnormal psych, and in her reading she went through every disease there was and decided which ones all her friends exhibited.  It’s days like this i wish i could remember what mine were. It was fun to watch her process go from naming everyone’s problems to then coming to the conclusion that we all have to be a little bit nuts to be ok, and that it’s a more extreme version of what she was seeing that actually denotes illness.
