My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Definitely plays on the charm that I have for moments of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, but in a way that sets itself apart. Fantastic coming of age drama.
This is probably the most believable and science-like magic system I’ve ever read. Some of that work makes it thoroughly enjoyable, along with a fascinating main character.
I definitely pitched a fit when some characters wander out of the story, which is an excellent mark of great writing. Some characters felt more flat or ill-defined by comparison, but given that this is set to be a trilogy, there is more to come and it’s not like i can judge yet.
