I find politics frustrating at best, but I do not understand why so much of this positioning matters enough to people to become news. It has come to my attention that the Hillary Clinton camp has a new famous supporter: Fabio. Now, given that I’m an educated person with opinions on many national and global […]

Thoughts from listening to defending jezebel (on point 6 Nov)…
The book is Lesley Hazelton’s Jezebel: The Untold Story of the Bible’s Harlot Queen.
Jezebel was “framed” according to Hazelton, and she spends a lot of time setting up this concept. Infidelity here is actually religious infidelity rather than sexual infidelity. The story is told as the […]

强迫症
I learned a new word in Chinese today while listening to Chinesepod. I believe I learned it before, and likely Maomao would be upset with me for forgetting. Unfortunately if I don’t use words then I am not so likely to remember them.
Let’s look at the components here for fun:
强 (qiang): strong, powerful, energetic

I was listening to BBC worldservice this morning, and apparently a book called Wolf Totem (朗图腾) by Jiang Rong is going to be published in English. I’m not sure why this news is hitting now, as the book was set for English publication back in 2005, unless it’s the news that the translation is […]

I am often dismayed by the misuse of words. This is not to say that I’m horribly offended by grammatical transgressions (though I often make fun of them), but there are some things people say because they’re “supposed to” that make little sense to me.
The best example of this is the apology.
Sometimes things go wrong. […]

Responses to “On Point” from 7 November
The folks in the Washington Post are of the opinion that Anti-Americanism has transformed into a more mass antiamericanism, something that transcends various ideological subsets. The best example brought up is that it is ludicrous to expect a political leader to promote US interests if the general public of […]

Since it started I have been watching Ugly Betty, and it is even fair to say that I am a fan. I like the challenge of fashion and beauty and utter nerdiness. I like the inherent challenge of different class levels butting heads, and I love the ability to use the show to laugh at […]

Last night I met up with a couple of friends for beers, and through several turns of conversation, environmental issues came up. Given that this is what I study and work on, and that I’m interested in the interaction between society, government, and social justice issues that relate to the environment, my interest was […]

Jezebel reposted the Daily Show clip on whether we are ready for a woman president, and I have to say… I love the Daily show. What a fun combination of clips, presentation, and ridiculousness.
I have been silently dying at my desk over this one this morning, and to some extent, this makes up for my […]
